First Class seating on the Valley Trains is aboard this 1898 Pullman Parlor Observation car.
Spacious first class seating aboard the beautifully restored Pullman Parlor-Observation Car Gertrude Emma is offered on all Valley Train departures. Built in 1898 for use on the “Pennsylvania Limited,” the Gertrude Emma has been restored to its original splendor with individual wicker chairs, large double-wide windows, rich mahogany woodwork, its own snack bar, and open observation platform.
First Class dining on the Dining Car Chororua is an option on the Valley Trains from mid-June through late October. A three-course lunch is available twice a day, on both the 11:30 departure to Bartlett and the 1:30 departure to Conway. Dinner service is available on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings through Sunday of Columbus Day Weekend.
Please note: Vintage diesel electric locomotives power most of our excursions. However, during midweek in May until Memorial Day week and midweek the last week in October, excursions are on our Budd Rail Diesel Car, the Millie, which is a self-propelled, diesel-hydraulic rail passenger car. If motive power is important to you, we recommend calling ahead with questions. All excursions are round-trip. Our 1921 steam locomotive #7470 is out of service for until 2018 while it undergoes a major, federally-mandated overhaul.
The 11-mile, 55-minute roundtrip Conway excursion is ideal for visitors wanting a shorter train ride, especially those with young children. On this excursion, you’ll travel south past the Moat Mountain Range and parallel Route 16 before passing through farmlands and crossing Moat Brook, the Saco and Swift Rivers on the way to Conway. Here, you can watch the powerful locomotive “run around” the train in preparation of the return trip.
The 21 mile, 1¾ hour roundtrip Bartlett excursion offers a longer and more relaxing train ride that takes you “over the river and through the woods.” You’re invited to sit back and enjoy the passing scenery as you travel through fields and woodlands, crossing the East Branch, Saco and Ellis Rivers on the way to Bartlett. Here you also have the opportunity to watch the locomotive “run around” for the return trip to North Conway.
